While the movie €Real Steel€ may not have been all that great, it certainly has made for a pretty good premise for a video game. After all, people would much rather control fighting Rock€em Sock€em robots than actually watch Hugh Jackman control one. The first Real Steel game enjoyed over 10 million downloads on the App Store, but what about its follow up, Real Steel: World Robot Boxing?

Real Steel: World Robot Boxing is a more refined version of the first game. Many of our favorite fighters from the movie and the first game return for the sequel, and the controls are made a little more transparent and look a lot cleaner.

The game is very heavy with in-app purchases, as well as limited in the amount of things players can do in a given time. To avoid some of the IAPs, they'll have to compete in Time Trials or Free Sparring, essentially grinding out for currency to upgrade their robot. There are also some features missing from the original, such as tag team boxing and creating one's own robot. Instead we have paint jobs, the only real customization one can do to their robot, which are nothing more than pre-determined schemes for a given fighter that offer a pay out bonus at the end of a fight.

photo 1Even with all those issues, however, Real Steel: World Robot Boxing is actually quite enjoyable. The presentation and cinematics might be a little silly, but they work with the nature of a Robot vs. Robot cage match. The graphics are surprisingly slick given the amount of animation within a fight; anything from a regular old punch to the finishing move render smoothly. Even the special punch, which is a quick time event that boils down to how fast one can tap on the screen, and offers a bit of a break from the norm mid fight, looks fantastic.

Real Steel World Robot Boxing does exactly what one would expect it to do, giving players the fun and excitement of robot vs robot fisticuff action. It may not be the best game on the app store but that doesn't mean it isn't a fun experience, even if it did take some things away from the first Real Steel mobile game. Players will enjoy smashing the AI to bits, and even have the option to fight against friends in localized multiplayer. Even if they've never experienced the real Rock€em Sock€em robots, they'll agree that the mobile version is light years better.

Real Steel World Robot Boxing is a sports game from Reliance Games, which tries to potray the boxing theme with robots as your boxers. The game involves a whole lot of strategy as to how you want your robot to play - weapons, special powers, defence, and so on. Real Steel WRB is a robot game, nothing brand new in that, but takes a new route with some of its creativity. Let's take a look at the game then.

Starting with the game's gameplay, it is pretty much all about fighting robots with your own and that's fun, isn't it? You get to choose from a list of robots depending on your level. Starting with the basic one, you have to face fiv robots in a level, and in between, you get upgrade your player's defences, powers, special abilities like getting ten extra seconds in the match. Your main objective is to dethrone Zeus, who comes after you are done fighting several robots. Your main power is to basically get your super move on the opponent, and try and protect your robot from the opponent's super move as much as possible. You are required to tap as many times as you can in order to get more out of your super move and defense when facing your opponent's. If you win, you obviously get some rewards and then move to face the next opponent.

As far as controls go. You are given on-screen control pads - left, right, up, and down - and defense, hit, punch, and super move which comes once in a while. While these controls aren't adequate, I found them to be not very reliable. The controls were noticeably less responsive as you would expect from a fighting game. You would have to apply more key stokes for accomplishing your moves. What's nice is that you're shown when a player has counter-attacked, when blocked, and so on. Neat for such a game.

Time to fight some larger-than-life robots! I'm not sure why exactly Real Steel hasn't done so well at the box office, but I've had a great time watching the movie (twice) and thought Huge Jackman fit the role perfectly. If you haven't seen it, Real Steel is based on the 1956 short story Steel by Richard Matheson and follows former boxed Charlie Kenton who owns the aging robot Ambush.

It's year 2020 and human boxers have been replaced by robots so cash-strapped Kenton makes a living by sending Ambush to fight other robots in tournaments across the country. The animatronics, stunts, special effects and acting are all very smooth.

DreamWorks, whose movie-making arm released the movie, has released a new tie-in, Real Steel: World Robot Boxing, for the iPhone and iPad as a free to play download on worldwide App Stores (the game previously soft-launched on the New Zealand App Store only)€¦

The game builds on its predecessor (see bottom of post) by packing better graphics, new robots, more modes and head-to-head multiplayer.

Real Steel: World Robot Boxing brings with it a total of 24 robots like Zeus, Atom and Twin Cities, eight new contenders (Touchdown, HollowJack, Blockbuster and Biowar, to name a few), ten nice arenas and four diverse modes (Championship, Time Attack, Daily Exhibition and Free Sparring).
