Fashion Duos in the 1980s
- Exercise outfits and leg warmers were not just for the gym in the early '80s. Inspired by movies like "Fame" and "Flashdance," along with Jane Fonda's workout VHS and Olivia Newton John's "Let Get Physical" music video, women everywhere wore sweatbands and leg warmers for casual activities such as shopping and clubbing, often pairing them with mini skirts or spandex leggings.
Sweatbands were worn high across the forehead and leg warmers were available in many different colors and designs like stripes and sparkles, for funky, if not functional, style. - Big hair and blue eyeshadow were all the rage throughout the 1980s. Women and men alike ratted their hair and used vast amounts of hairspray to achieve huge hairstyles. While women went for curled and coiffed styles, men's hair was more messy.
Bright blue eyeshadow allowed the eyes to compete with the towering hairstyles. Many of the male rock stars of the decade also used shadow and liner to define their eyes, albeit in a slightly more modest manner. - Hip-hop music and fashion gained fame in the '80s, thanks to artists like Kid 'n Play. Christopher "Kid" Reid and Chris "Play" Martin are known for introducing "the fade" hairstyle and promoting hip-hop trends and brands like Adidas jogging suits, high-top sneakers, brightly-colored leather jackets and thick, gold chains. The duo also reintroduced the Charleston as an intricate hip hop dance that required two people to perform and christened it the Kid 'n Play after themselves.
- Don Johnson and by Philip Michael Thomas, as stars of "Miami Vice", were fashion icons for men through much of the 80s. "Miami Vice" was one of the most popular television shows of the time, and stylish men across America copied Johnson's business-casual look by pairing loafers worn without socks with pastel-colored blazers or sweaters tied over the shoulders. Polo shirts with turned-up shirt collars or T-shirts beneath the blazer completed the look that women apparently loved -- or maybe it was just Don Johnson.
