How to Remove Pet Smells from Couch Cushions

    • 1). Vacuum your couch thoroughly before attempting to remove the odors. Vacuuming will remove pet hairs that may contribute to the odor problem, and will make any odor-removal treatment easier. Empty your vacuum cleaner or vacuum cleaner bag first to increase your vacuum's suction power.

    • 2). Unzip the couch cushion covers if they are removable, then launder the cushion covers as directed by the furniture manufacturer. Add 1 lb. of baking soda to the wash cycle along with your regular detergent, as baking soda will help to neutralize the pet odors. Air dry the covers, if possible. If you aren't comfortable laundering your cushion covers yourself, take the covers to a professional dry cleaner.

    • 3). Spray non-removable couch cushions lightly with water, then sprinkle a generous coating of baking soda over the affected areas. Allow the area to dry overnight, then remove the baking soda with a brush or a vacuum with an upholstery attachment.

    • 4). Neutralize pet odors in non-removable couch cushions with white, distilled vinegar. Mix a solution of 1 to 2 cups of white vinegar in a gallon of water. Place the solution in a spray bottle. Spray the affected area thoroughly, then cover the sprayed areas with thick towels. Place heavy objects on the towels, as the pressure will allow the vinegar to penetrate more deeply into the couch. Allow the couch to dry, then repeat if necessary.

    • 5). Use a commercial pet odor neutralizer if home remedies fail to remove the pet odor from your couch cushions. Apply the neutralizer according to the directions on the package.
