The Call to Foster Care
It was sometime in September or October of 2007 when I clearly felt the Lord's calling to foster care.
I was in my Bible Study Fellowship lecture and we were working our way through Matthew.
The book of Matthew isn't necessarily the "orphan" highlighting book of the Bible, but it is what the Lord used to speak to me at that time.
I remember sitting there thinking, "But Lord...
I already have 4 children and my youngest is only 3 AND, AND, AND..
..
" and I have knew that I was only coming up with silly excuses.
I KNEW that it was the Lord's "crazy" idea and NOT mine and that's why I knew I HAD to talk to my husband.
"What! Are you crazy?! We already have 4 kids!", said my husband.
To which I reply..
..
"really honey, this wasn't my crazy idea!" So Ieft it in the Lord's hands and figured if He was truly calling us that he'd call my husband too.
Fast forward a few months and a few thousand miles south and you'll find the Lord working in my husband's heart down in a little orphanage in Mexico.
He thought he was going to help wire up a few buildings and little did he know God had other reasons for sending him there.
We knew he'd probably not be able to call me for the 9 days that he'd be gone, so I wasn't expecting to pick up the phone and hear his voice midweek through the trip.
But there he was, he'd found a phone and called home to tell me that God was indeed working in his heart and that we HAD to do foster care.
He spoke of the little orphans hanging all over his legs, wanting him to play soccer with him and thought to himself, "who am I NOT to help children if they need my help?".
I was pretty speechless!! (this is not normal for me to be speechless!) That was all I needed to hear and from then on we got the train moving forward.
One thing I must say is that if you feel a calling to do foster care or adopt and your husband doesn't, (or vice versa) just keep praying.
It may take awhile or it may be quick.
Bringing in "strangers" to their home is a hard thing to do for most men.
In fact, most of the time it's just a fear of the unknown that will stop them from helping.
I will save that for a future post though.
Have YOU ever felt a calling so strongly that you couldn't say no? Even if you knew it was going to be hard, you chose to obey that call..
..
I'd love to hear about it!
