A discount prescription card can be a great relief to anyone struggling with the cost of their medicine. These cards are designed to assist the carrier in obtaining discount prescriptions and saving on their overall medical costs. Some prescription cards, such as those offered through Medicare, are only offered to members. Typically, the cards offered through these organizations have restrictions based on income and age. Other prescription cards can be obtained by anyone and usually have very few restrictions if any at all. There are some cards that can only be used by people who have no healthcare.

Cards that feature heavy restrictions are typically offered through government programs like Medicare. Despite the fact that they are usually free or low priced, the limitations on who can use them tend to rule out a lot of people. The age bracket is usually set at 65 for individual use. Families using these prescription discount cards tend to have young children. Individuals and families who obtain government prescription cards are typically live on a low or fixed income.

Other cards that offer discount prescriptions are provided by organizations. The American Association of Retired Persons provides these types of cards to their members. Though there are restrictions on the individuals using them, it is usually negligible. The members of the organizations typically fit within those restrictions, which is why they became a member in the first place.

Some companies offer a prescription savings card that can be used by anyone. The companies that offer these cards haggle with pharmacies to get a lower price on prescriptions. These cards require a fee that can be paid either annually or monthly, depending on the company. Despite higher card fee, the user can generally obtain significant discounts on their prescription drugs. This type of prescription card usually comes with the benefit of no restrictions, which means that anyone can get them.

A less common prescription card is one that is offered to people who cannot afford health insurance or whose health insurance does not cover their prescriptions. These types of cards can be provided by the government or by drug manufacturers.

Getting a discount prescription card depends heavily on what the type of person and that person's particular lifestyle. For older or low-income individuals, a prescription card offered through the government, organization, or drug manufacturer might be ideal. Even though the cost is low, there is the chance that you, for whatever reason, do not fit into their restrictions. For everyone else, a restriction-free prescription card offered through a company is the best choice for discounts.
