Do-it-Yourself Garden Windows

    • 1). Locate the best window for the plants that you want to grow. Use a window that receives six to eight hours of sun for herbs and vegetables, or a window in a less sunny area if the chosen plants do not require as much sun.

Wash the window inside and out with a rag and a vinegar-water mixture. Wipe down the sill area with warm soapy water and rinse. Allow the area to dry thoroughly.

    • 2). Hang one or more plant hangers above the window. Screw them into place using a screwdriver to be sure that they are secure and will support the plants. Use one hanger, centered, above a small or skinny window. Try two over a medium-width window. Place three hangers above a wide window. Space these evenly.

Place a table or low shelf in front of a window if you are just looking for a place to set a few plants. Use a tall, open-backed shelving unit for placement of more plants, or consider hanging a shelf at mid-height in front of the window if tall shelves are not desired. Hang this shelf by placing it on brackets that have been hung to either side of the window.

    • 3). Gather together the pots that you will be using for planting, as well as seeds, seedlings and soil. Fill all the pots with soil. Push your finger into the soil of each pot 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep, depending on the plants' packet instructions. Place the seeds into this hole and cover with soil. Make sure the entire root systems of the seedlings you plant are covered with soil, then water all the seeds and seedlings and set aside.

    • 4). Protect the shelves and window sill where the plants will be placed using shelf-liner or another type of liner that will keep the areas dry. Adhere these to the shelves, or place the liners over them loosely for easy replacement over time.

Hang plants over the windows first, then place the other potted plants on the shelves that you have covered.
