    Gathering Votes

    • The Senate majority whip's primary responsibility is to mobilize votes within his party. The majority whip ensures that the party votes as one on important issues in the Senate. The majority leader must gather and count the votes present in their caucus before the Senate votes for any given legislation.

    Rounding Up Party Members

    • The Senate majority whip must ensure member attendance before a vote is held on legislation. The majority whip is responsible for rounding up party members for votes and quorum calls.

    Acting Floor Leader

    • In the absence of the majority leader, the majority whip often serves as acting floor leader. The majority leader normally controls the floor of the Senate and is the speaker for the majority party during Senate debates. The majority whip will assume these responsibilities when the majority leader is not present.

    Senator

    • Ultimately, the majority whip is an elected official and must fulfill her responsibilities as a U.S. senator. She must represent the views of her constituents and state in the Senate as well as her political party.
