The Accidental Vegetarians
Green smoothies have so many knock on effects.
One casualty has been my love of meat and meat related products.
It has sadly almost vanished.
Don't get me wrong; I have a favorite steak restaurant that I LOVE! The mere suggestion of visiting this establishment has me in the car in less than 5 seconds flat.
So based on this, I know my inner carnivore has not completely vanished.
I do notice that I no longer crave meat or poultry.
I really enjoy the smoothies, salads; vegetarian home made pizzas, felafels etc.
Several times a week, we have a piece of Atlantic salmon with lemon and aioli.
Delicious! I recently watched a DVD recently about food and how the commercial food industry goes about growing and producing the food for our supermarkets.
It has made me think about the way I approach food shopping and what I choose to buy both from a nutrient and ethical standpoint.
It is the type of DVD that once you have seen it, you can't forget it.
I have often been asked if I use green smoothies as a meal replacement.
The simple answer to this is no.
What has changed is what I eat, more than how often I eat.
Below is what works for me, you will find your own balance and what is right for you.
I base what I eat on the principle of eating around 500gms of greens per day.
On an average day for example, I will have a scrambled egg, mushrooms and quarter of an avocado for breakfast.
Lunch will be a tablespoon of organic natural yoghurt, Goji berries, Chia seeds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pepitas, 1 teaspoon each of ground linseed and organic honey.
Dinner is usually one or two salads.
I have three serves of fish each week.
I also have approximately 2 liters of green smoothie per day.
The reason I eat in this way is to raise my good cholesterol, reduce my bad cholesterol and get the nutrients and minerals I need from my food.
I need to keep my cholesterol low for health reasons.
I also eat this way because I love it and find my body responds well to this type of food.
I would not have voluntarily given up meat, however I'm quite happy I have reduced it.
It was further confirmed at a recent BBQ when I could not wait to dive into the delicious vegetarian dishes and salads.
As I wiped my mouth on the napkin at the end of the meal, I realized I hadn't eaten any meat at all.
We did become Accidental Vegetarians - well, almost!
