How Is Wood Laminate Made?
- Laminate flooring is made by pressing together a moisture-resistant layer of material with high-density fiberboard. A paper with a high-resolution photograph of hardwood flooring is added, then sealed with a special resin.
- Plywood is made by gluing together several thin layers of hard and soft woods. The grain of each layer is alternated to give the plywood added strength.
- OSB is made by pressing together 3- and 4-inch-long, very thin pieces of wood to form a sheet. The sheets are then pressed together with wood fibers oriented at right angles to the layer above and below it.
- Although not a laminate itself, particle board is often laminated with a wood or plastic veneer for a better appearance. Particle board is made from sawdust and other wood scraps pressed tightly together and glued under pressure.
- Laminates can contain wood that cannot be used for other products. The materials in laminates might otherwise get burned or discarded, but using them avoids felling new trees.
