How to Get a Horse Used to a Water Bath
- 1). Have an assistant hold your horse instead of tying him. This will prevent injury to the horse or destruction of a hitching post or other object that the horse is tied to. Do not wash your horse's face or head the first time you bathe him. Instead, use a soft wet cloth to wipe her face clean.
- 2). Run the water over your horse's lower legs first, not his body. Use a gentle spray with warm water. Reassure your horse throughout the bathing session by speaking calmly and rewarding her by rubbing her when she stands still.
- 3). Wet your horse's chest after he has stood quietly with water running down his legs. Proceed to running water over his shoulders and lower neck. If he gets anxious, stay calm and go back to running the water over an area where he stood calmly.
- 4). Carefully run the water over your horse's back. Move to her flanks and rump only if she has remained calm with the water on her back.
- 5). Rub a currycomb or soft brush on him while the water is still running over his body.
- 6). Turn off the hose. Rub your horse's body gently with the edge of your hand or a sweat scraper to remove excess water. A sweat scraper should never be used on your horse's legs.
- 7). Help your horse to regard bathing as a positive experience by grooming her for a few minutes after the bath.
