Size Selection

• The size of the bird bath is contingent on what kinds of birds the homeowner wants to draw to it. Learn which birds are prevalent in the area and determine which ones you want to attract. If the bath is too small, large birds will avoid it. If the bath is large, smaller birds will shun it if larger birds are already there. A common bird bath size is at about 2 feet in diameter and no more than 3 inches deep.

• A bird bath with sloping sides and a deep center accommodates both small and medium-size birds and promotes the collection of leaves and other debris in the bottom of the bath.
  
  

Water Depth

• Deeper water scares off some birds. Keeping the water level between 1 and 3 inches is recommended, as smaller birds can use the water at the edges of the bath and larger ones can enjoy the deeper water in the center.
