Unprecedented Wind Energy Investment In Canada
An unprecedented wind energy investment in Ontario will create new jobs and attract new investment to the province. The Canadian Wind Energy Association welcomes the Ontario government for recognizing the importance of wind energy investments that can produce clean wind power to Ontario. Around 48 new wind energy projects were awarded recently which could produce over 1,500 megawatts of power, and this is considered as one of the largest individual investments in wind energy in the history of Canada.
The President of Canadian Wind Energy Association, Robert Hornung, recently articulated that the crucial step for the government of Ontario and the Power Authority of Ontario was to understand the enormous potential of wind energy and its integral role in the La Green Energy Act of Ontario. Ontario has embraced clean energy investments and has become the undisputed leader in North America, through the greening of the national economy.
The long-term success of the Green Energy Act will depend on a continued commitment to increase access to a free and fair program in tariffs, and accelerated investments in energy and new infrastructure distribution. About $2.75 bn USD in private sector investment is required for every 1,000 megawatts of new wind power installed. This would create over 1,000 new jobs and enough power to 300,000 homes in Canada. It also represents three million US dollars in annual rental income for farmers and other rural landowners, as well as new revenues, like property taxes, for rural municipalities.
Robert Hornung asserted that, according to forecasts for 2020, more than a trillion dollars will be invested in "clean energy" across the world, creating more than 1.75 million jobs. Wind energy investments will help Ontario get a share of this growing economic opportunity that is growing rapidly worldwide, which will require continued investments in distribution infrastructure.
The Canadian Wind Energy Association released a document envisioning a year 2025 in which it was predicted that Canada will generate energy from wind energy sources which will produce tremendous economic opportunities, reduce the emission of greenhouse gas and address other environmental concerns.
To achieve the goal of meeting 20 percent of the country's electricity needs with wind energy by 2025, it requires around $79 billion in new energy investments and the creation of up to 52,000 new green jobs. In addition, $165 million dollars in new revenue will be generated for municipalities, many in rural areas that were hit hard by the decline of traditional natural resources. The mission of the Canadian Wind Energy Association is to support the responsible and sustainable development of wind energy in Canada.
