When asked about renewable energy sources, the first thing that springs to mid for most people is solar electricity. Just about everyone knows about generating electricity from the power of the sun. The uses of solar electricity are diverse, ranging from providing power to your pocket calculator to providing power to your entire home or business.

Solar electricity presents a number of unique advantages over rid based electricity. Solar electric systems can be deployed in remote areas where there is no possibility of being connected to the grid or where getting connected to the grid is extremely expensive. Also beneficial, particularly in remote areas, is the fact that the photovoltaic systems have no moving parts and are therefore very robust and require very little maintenance. In terms of expansion, these systems offer almost unlimited flexibility.

A major consideration when thinking about converting to solar electricity is the reduction of one's environmental impact. Solar power is free and is a renewable energy source. Solar electicity generation produces no noice or other polution. One of the most attractive aspects of solar electricity is the independence associated with it's use. It's nice for those in rural areas to know that they will not be left in the dark when the lights go out because of a storm or blackout. There's also the joy of not having to deal with the supply authorities and being told that you may need to wait half a day to get power restored.

The downside of converting to solar electricity has always been the cost. The start up costs can be very high. You will usually only see a return on your investment after a few years. It normally takes about five years for a professionally installed solar array for an average sized home to pay for itself. If buy a used system or even build your own solar panels, you can drastically reduce the initial cost. In some instances it is also possible to sell your unused or surplus solar electricity back to the electrical supply company. If this is the case, the payback period will be greatly reduced.

If you want to save the environment (and your wallet) then using solar electricity is the way to go. Solar electricity is already being used by a number of large cities around the world to supplement their power supplies. Take some time to learn more about generating solar electricity and reducing or even eliminating your electric bill.
