How to Turn a Wood Pomander

104 1
    • 1). Attach the blank to the lathe and rough out the overall shape of the pomander using a spindle gouge and a bowl gouge. Leave an unshaped cylinder at the top of the pomander whose height equals the desired height of the lid.

    • 2). Hollow out the cylinder at the end using the end-grain hollowing tool, then shape the lid using the gouges. The point at which the lid is still connected to the body of the pomander will be the top of the lid. When the lid is the desired shape, separate it from the body using the parting tool.

    • 3). Hollow out the body of the pomander with the end-grain hollowing tool, starting from the center and working outward to deepen the hollow by about one-eighth inch at a time.

    • 4). Set the calipers to match the exterior diameter of the lid. Cut down the top of the pomander to the calipers' width using the gouges. Set the calipers to match the interior diameter of the lid. Use a spindle gouge or parting tool to cut down the top one-eighth-to-one-fourth inch of the pomander to the calipers' width or slightly smaller to create a lip that the lid can fit onto.

    • 5). Remove the wood from the lathe and use a rotary tool to cut holes, slots or decorative patterns into the side of the pomander. These will allow the scent inside to circulate into the room. Cut off the chucks (protrusions used to attach wood to the lathe) using a box scraper.

    • 6). Sand the pomander and the lid either on the lathe or by hand. If desired, apply wax or the finish of your choice and allow the finish to dry completely.
