The 2002 Pontiac Sunfire is a subcompact automobile that was sold in three models: the GT two-door coupe, the SE two-door coupe and the SE four-door sedan. The GT coupe has a slightly more powerful engine than the SE models. All three are similar in their handling, dimensions and appearance. They were produced with five-speed standard transmissions or four-speed automatic transmissions. - All three models have a 2.2 liter, 4-cylinder engine. Gas mileage is 21 miles per gallon in the city and 30 miles per gallon on the highway. Horsepower is 140 at 5600 rpm for the GT model and 115 at 5000 rpm for the SE models. Torque is 150 foot-pounds at 4400 rpm on the GT model and 135 foot-pounds at 3600 rpm on the SE models. The GT also differs in that it has a dual overhead cam, 4 valves per cylinder and 16 valves total, while the SE models have an overhead valve, 2 valves per cylinder and 8 valves total. The GT's compression ratio is 10, while the SE's is 9. All models have a multi-point fuel-injection system.
- All Sunfires are front-wheel-drive vehicles equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS) and disc brakes in the front and rear. They have independent strut front suspension with coil springs and semi-independent beam rear suspension with coil springs.
- The Sunfire's fuel tank holds 14.1 gallons. The wheelbase is 104.1 inches. Car length is 182 inches, width is 68.4 inches and height is 53 inches. The GT model has a towing capacity of 1,000 pounds, while towing is not recommended on the other models. All can hold up to five passengers.
- 2002 Sunfires come with the following standard features: front air conditioning, AM/FM stereo, CD player, remote mirrors, power steering, folding rear seat, rear window defroster, tilt wheel and tachometer. Other features such as power locks, power mirrors and premium radio are optional.
