How to Wire a Three-Way Electrical Switch
- 1). Turn off the power to the circuit you are working on at the distribution panel. Confirm the power is off, at the wires, with a non-contact voltage detector.
- 2). Connect the source power wire (black) from the distribution panel to the bottom right terminal on the first switch. Back the terminal off with a screwdriver. Wrap the wire around the connection and tighten the terminal back down.
- 3). Run a 14/3 gauge wire from the first switch to the second switch.
- 4). Strip 1/2 inch of insulation off all of the wires with the wire strippers.
- 5). Connect the two white wires at the first light switch by twisting them together with pliers and installing a twist-on wire connector on top.
- 6). Connect the black wire from the 14/3 wire to the top right terminal on the first three-way switch.
- 7). Connect the red wire from the 14/3 wire to the top left terminal on the first three-way switch.
- 8). Fasten the black wire from the other end of the 14/3 wire to the top right terminal on the second switch. Connect the red wire from the 14/3 wire to the top left terminal on the second switch.
- 9). Connect the black wire, which powers the light, to the bottom right terminal on the second switch.
