Our Pet Dog Died a Family Affair

103 1
We brought home our dog "Skeeter" on Thanksgiving day a present for our son and our first family dog.
What a cute puppy, ears as big as a satellite dish.
A Papillion is known for big ears, from behind they look like a butterfly, thus the name papillion.
(french word for butterfly) My son got the name from a cartoon he liked, thus Skeeter became a part of our family and we couldn't be more happy.
Skeeter was a dog with his own mind and really enjoyed people.
We kept him in a crate which gave him some comfort and a sense of security, although on occasion he did not like being locked up.
The story we tell all of our friends is when we put Skeeter in his cage while we were away, upon return, Skeeter managed to move the crate across the room some how.
We never knew how he did it because we never saw it, but sure enough it was in another part of the room.
We even tried stacking heavy paint cans on top of his crate to see if that would stop him from moving the crate, but sure enough when we returned the crate was moved, we thought about hiding a video camera while we were out to see if he could still move it but we never did, it will have to remain his secret we will never know how he did it.
Skeeter was a loyal dog, a friend and companion like many dogs are to their owners, my son would sleep with Skeeter, he was warm and had long fluffy white hair which would keep my son warm on winter nights.
I would bring Skeeter into his room late at night if he forget to get him before he went to sleep.
Skeeter slept with my son all the way up to the end even when my son was 23 years old no longer a young boy but a young man now.
For some reason around his 10th year of life his breathing became labored, we did not think much of it until we took him in for his annual shots when the doctor told us Skeeter might have kidney disease? He took a blood sample and after a few days we got a call, Skeeter in fact did have kidney disease and we should bring him in for treatment options.
After a few days in the doggie hospital, the vet said "I'm sorry, there is nothing we can do for him" Skeeter had about one month more to live.
We thought about putting him down but we just couldn't so we took him home to care for him, it was our long goodbye.
Me and my son would give him fluid injections every other day to help his kidney's, but in the end there was nothing we could do.
Skeeter passed away on election day.
I went out to vote and when I returned he was gone.
We had a nice burial service, buried him under an old oak tree in the woods behind my childhood home.
We each had a rose my wife prepared, said a little speech and placed the rose on his grave.
It was a good closure for our family and my son who was attached to his companion dog.
I'm sure he will bring his children to this place when they are older to show them where his first dog is buried.
Dogs are a part of the family and will be greatly missed.
That's why they say "Dogs are a mans best friend" our family thinks so!
