    Tin-Can Stilts

    • You may remember a time from your childhood when you held coffee cans to the bottom of your feet with a strong cord. These were homemade hand-held or tin-can stilts. They may also have been made with plastic buckets. Hand-held stilts can also be made of a long stick of wood with a foot platform in the middle. You stand on the foot platform and hold onto the stick. You must keep moving when using these stilts to prevent falling over.

    Peg Stilts

    • Peg stilts are typically made out of wood with rubber stoppers on the bottom. There is a foot platform on the wood pole that the stilt is made from, and your feet slide under straps to hold them in place. Peg stilts also have straps at the ankle and around the knee to hold them on. Stilt-walking circus performers typically wear peg stilts.

    Drywall Stilts

    • Drywall stilts have a longer and wider base than peg stilts, so that construction workers can stand still on them safely. They are typically made from aluminum and have a foot strap and and a calf cuff that can be adjusted to the size of your leg. Many drywall stilts have springs to help make walking more natural.

    Jumping Stilts

    • Jumping stilts are made from steel and springs. The steel curves behind the back of your leg and the stilt is attached to your leg at the foot and around the knee. The jumping action resembles that of the back legs of a deer. Amazing acrobatic feats are possible in jumping stilts; skilled users can do flips in them.
