How to Build a Wind Turbine from Scratch

101 3
Many people are under the belief that building a wind turbine has to be a difficult task. In reality it is not and for those who are wondering how to build a wind turbine, here is some basic information on the project.

There are only a few major components that go into the construction of a wind turbine. These components are the blades and the generator. If you are wondering how to build a wind turbine, the first thing you need to learn is the construction of the generator.

The Wind Turbine Generator

While it is generally called a generator when it is powered by a gasoline or diesel engine, when you need to produce electricity via the wind, the common term is an alternator. There are many reasons for this, but we really do not have to go into them because it will just complicate things.

The wind turbine generator needs to be able to freely spin with very little friction. For this reason, most homemade turbines do not use a brush design. After all, this would make the process to complicated. Instead, we use permanent magnets to produce the power. The generator itself is composed of two flat disks. One disk is attached to the blades and spins freely while the other is attached to the mast and does not spin at all. Permanent magnets are mounted on the disk that rotates and the other one features wound coils which use the moving magnetic field of the first disk to create the power.

Placement of the magnets and coils on the two disks are important and will ultimately determine the output voltage, amperage and frequency. In order to reduce the friction, the coils and magnets are first mounted onto pieces of plywood that is then covered with epoxy resin. This also helps to reduce wear and tear on the components.

The coils are generally wound in at least 3 phases so as to reduce the amount of back EMF produced by the generator. This back EMF can prevent the wind turbine from spinning altogether.

The Wind Turbine Blades

For those who are wondering how to build a wind turbine, the most complicated portion of this task is the design and construction of the blades. Some people bypass this portion altogether and instead opt for purchasing commercially manufactured blades instead. The choice is up to you, but in order to get the highest efficiency as well as the greatest cost savings, choosing to design and build your own blades is an obvious choice.

The blades are responsible for converting the wind's lateral force into the rotational force necessary for powering the generator. The larger the surface are of the blades, the more efficient it is. With this said, if the surface of a blade is too large, then it may weigh too much and it is possible that any efficiency gains could be lost as a result of an increase in friction. Keep this in mind when you start your wind turbine project.
