    Location

    • The banana plant is a tropical plant that needs to be in a location where it will be exposed to at least 12 hours of light per day and a humidity level of at least 50 percent. An ideal daytime growing temperature for banana plants is 80 degrees Fahrenheit, while nighttime lows should be no less than 67 degrees Fahrenheit. Most banana plants should be able to survive the occasional frost with little damage.

    Soil

    • Banana plants can be grown in many types of soil, though ordinary potting soil should never be used. Any kind of soil that is deep enough to accommodate the banana plant is generally acceptable as long as it has proper drainage. Twenty percent of perlite can be added to the soil to increase the overall drainage amount.

    Fertilizer

    • Fertilizer should be given to your banana plants once per month during growing season, with some mature plants needing as much as 2 pounds of fertilizer at a time. New banana plants may only require 8 oz. of fertilizer. An 8-10-8 fertilizer, which contains 8 percent nitrogen, 10 percent phosphorous and 8 percent potassium, is a well-balanced solution for fertilizing your banana plants. When applying fertilizer of any kind, take care to ensure that the fertilizer never comes in direct contact with any part of your banana plant, which could seriously harm it. Instead, spread it evenly in a circle around the base of the banana plant for best results.

    Watering

    • Water will be required by your banana plants once every two or three days. A thorough watering is necessary to ensure the water penetrates the soil and reaches the root system of the banana plant. Like with all plants, avoid overwatering your banana plants as they do not require constant moisture in the soil around them. Banana plants should also be watered every time they are fertilized.
