Fittonia Juanita Care
- Fittonia Juanita is a dense, creeping plant, originally from South America, that grows from 4 to 6 inches high with a spread of 1 to 2 feet. Its green, elliptical leaves are covered with a lattice of pink veins. Plant it as ground cover, in a hanging basket or grow it in a pot indoors.
- Your Fittonia Juanita will grow just fine in the light of a north-facing window that does not produce a shadow. If it gets too much light, its leaves will shrivel. Use lukewarm water to keep the soil moist at all times. If you over-water your plant, the leaves will turn yellow and wilt. If your plant is wilting, you need to water it. If it hasn't been dry for more than a few hours, it will perk up as soon as you water it.
- Fittonias like temperatures between 77 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit in the daytime and 65 to 70 degrees at night. Your Fittonia Juanita also likes humidity, so you should mist it occasionally. Fittonias flourish in a terrarium. If you grow yours outside of a terrarium, you can increase the humidity by keeping its pot on a tray filled with water and pebbles. Relative humidity of 50 percent or better is best. If the air is too dry, the leaves of your plant will shrivel.
- You can propagate your Fittonia Juanita by planting stem cuttings. If you take care of it, your plant will live for several years. When it begins to decline, simply plant a cutting and keep it going. Do not fertilize your Fittonia Juanita for three to four months after you plant it or get it established. Once it is established, fertilize it monthly with a standard fertilizer formulated for houseplants and diluted to half the recommended strength.
