Homemade Aromatic Diffuser Oils

    • 1). Pour one ounce of an essential oil of your choice into the glass bottle. Lavender, jasmine, grapefruit, bergamot, chamomile and patchouli are examples for oils that are traditionally stress-relieving.

    • 2). Add 2 ¼ ounces of dipropylene glycol to the bottle. Dipropylene glycol acts as a carrier oil and dilutant for the essential oil. It can be purchased online through perfume and soap supply wholesalers.

    • 3). Place a lid or cork on the bottle and shake gently to combine the oils. When fully combined, you should not be able to see any separation between the liquids. Some oils, like citrus oils, may turn the dipropylene glycol cloudy but this doesn't affect the fragrance or its ability to disperse. Similarly, vanillascented oils usually turn a darker brown color as they age, but the smell of the mixtures will remain unchanged.

    • 4). Add ¼ ounce of perfumer's alcohol if you find that your mixture is too thick to wick up the reeds. The alcohol will thin the oil solution enough to allow it to spread up the reeds. Perfumer's alcohol is available through many of the same online retailers that sell dipropylene glycol. Glass bottles suitable for mixing diffuser oils are available at craft supply stores and home decorating stores. Any glass bottle with a lid will do, so check re-sale stores or even your own kitchen cabinets for an old bottle you can reuse.

    • 5). Add more essential oils if the fragrance isn't as strong as you would like. Synthetic oils used by large diffuser manufacturers are often more potent and true essential oils will not smell as strongly unless used in greater quantities.

    • 6). Add the mixture to an existing reed diffuser or add new diffusion reeds to the bottle of oil you just made. In a few hours, the oil will wick to the top of the reeds and begin to scent your home.
