Definition:
An antibiotic treatment prescribed to prevent the onset of a particular disease ("primary" prophylaxis), or the recurrence of symptoms in an existing infection that has been brought under control ("secondary" prophylaxis, maintenance therapy). Prophylaxis medications are prescribed to prevent opportunistic infections in people living with HIV and AIDS.
