    Training the Roping Horse

    • 1). Start with a solid foundation. Before you even consider training your horse to rope you will need to make sure he has received a solid foundation in the basics. Make sure your horse knows how to walk, trot and canter on a loose rein, and be sure he knows how to pick up his leads. Also be sure your horse knows how to back up with leg cues alone; you will need to have a solid back on your horse before you can start your roping training.

    • 2). Get your horse used to the rope by carrying it with you as you work with him. When you lead your horse to and from the pasture each morning bring the rope with you. Allow the rope to drag behind you as you walk, and casually swing it around your horse as you move around. Continue this training from the saddle by swinging the rope around your head as you walk, trot and canter around the paddock, ring or pasture.

    • 3). Purchase a roping dummy, which is basically a plastic replica of a calf head that can be attached to an ordinary bale of hay. Place the roping dummy on the hay bale and move the bale into the training area. Saddle and bridle your horse, mount up and grab your rope. Approach the roping dummy and make the catch. As soon as the rope has landed immediately cue your horse to back up at a moderate pace.

    • 4). Allow the horse to back up until all the slack has been taken out of the rope, then dismount your horse from the off side. Immediately begin moving down the rope toward the "calf" but keep an eye on your horse at the same time. If your horse begins to pull back on the rope walk back to him and move him forward. If he follows you forward, stop and move him back into place. Continue this training until your horse patiently stands and waits for you to return.
