Historical Highlights

Oranges date back as far as 7000 years to China and India, where they were used both medicinally and as a food. They were highly prized among the Romans, traveling along ancient trade routes to the Mediterranean. It is believed Christopher Columbus brought oranges to the New World from Europe, where they quickly spread to Florida and South America. They were used to prevent scurvy by ancient traders, and in India and China as a cure for the common cold, to lower fever, and alleviate headaches.

The oil of the orange is utilized today as it was throughout history in massage therapy and as a relaxing and soothing aroma. Oranges derive their name from their color, but they can also be green!

Research

The phytonutrients in oranges, especially the flavonoid ‘herperidin’ found particularly in the white pulp and peel, have been found to diminish cholesterol and high blood pressure. The pith of the orange is especially high in phytonutrients, so it’s important to include this in your juice! Other studies show that certain flavonoids in oranges fight cancer and heart disease. Another study showed that oranges reduce the risk of many cancers, including pancreatic, colon, and prostate.

Benefits

Oranges are exceptionally high in vitamins C, A, and B compounds, and the minerals iron, calcium, copper, potassium, phosphorus, sulfur, sodium, and magnesium. Oranges are a healthy food for dieters and those with diabetes since they’re especially high in fiber, low in calories, and contain no cholesterol or saturated fats.

The rich content of fiber helps diminish blood sugar levels. Oranges contain pectin which acts similarly to a laxative and defends the colon from toxins. Oranges also contain potent antioxidants which function as anti-inflammatories, protecting the body’s immune system and helping to fight infection.
