Safe Fly Insecticide for Chickens
- A permethrin-based insecticide can both repel and kill fly populations around poultry. The insecticides are available in various forms: vapor strips, fly baits, larvicides, residual sprays and space sprays. Used correctly, permethrin-based insecticides will not cause damage to meat or eggs or injure the chickens.
- Residual insecticide sprays should never be applied directly to the chicken but may be used in the coop and surrounding region. Spraying all surfaces with the residual insecticides will provide fly protection for up to four weeks, according to Oklahoma State University.
- Larvicides offer a safe insecticide choice for use around chickens. The larvicide may be sprayed directly onto the chicken's manure to effectively kill fly larvae. Unfortunately, flies often develop an immunity to the insecticide. Larvicides are also available as a chicken feed additive but should only be used on caged chickens. Avoid eating the meat or eggs of birds fed with the larvicide.
