Knee pain can hinder your workout routine whether it is from injury, arthritis or other conditions.
Here are some ideas on how to get yourself back on the move by keeping your knees healthy.
Change activities: If your knees are hurting then they need some time off to rest.
Stop running or doing any of the other activities that is making it worse.
Switch your workouts that involve swimming, walking, biking or other things that don't put pounding pressure on your knee joints.
Weight training will build muscle strength that will help to support your knees.
Pain relievers: Medicines you can buy over the counter like acetaminophen and ibuprofen will ease the pain and the latter will also reduce swelling.
There are also pain relieving gels and creams to help the discomfort.
Ice packs: Use ice packs for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, four times a day, to help keep the pain and swelling to a minimum.
Compression: Wrapping your knee with an elastic bandage will give it extra support and keep the swelling down.
Elevation: Keep swelling down by elevating your knee above the level of your heart.
Remember that if knee pain continues for longer than three days you should call your doctor.
Here are some questions to ask your doctor when you see him/her: 1.
What is causing my knee pain? Is it from an injury, overworking it, arthritis or some other problem? 2.
What are my treatment options? Which pain reliever is the best for my circumstance? 3.
What kind of exercise should I do? How many times a week and for how many weeks? 4.
What can I do to prevent my knee pain from getting worse? Being overweight or obese is the leading cause of knee pain.
Keep your weight at a healthy level and you reduce your chances of knee pain significantly.
