Card Games for a Large Crowd
- This game du jour of American casino poker rooms is normally played on tables seating nine or 10 players. Since players only get two face down cards in their hand, you can play Texas Hold 'Em with as many as 20 players. The goal is to make the best five-card poker hand using the two cards in your hand along with the five community cards placed in the center of the table. The game includes four betting rounds -- before the flop, after the flop (the first three community cards), after the turn (one more community card) and after the river (the last community card).
- This drawing game is relatively simple. You get three cards in your hand and must draw and discard in an attempt to reach a total of 31; aces count as 11 and face cards as 10. The wrinkle is that you can only count cards of the same suit toward your total. This game can be played with up to eight or nine players, especially if you use more than one deck for the stock pile.
- Often played on tables that seat seven in the casino, you can play the classic game of blackjack with many more players if you desire since each player will only receive on average two to five cards each. One player serves as the dealer and deals themselves one card down and one card up. Each of the other players receives two face cards up and must try to make a total of 21 or get closer to that number than the dealer. Players can take cards -- known as hitting -- or stand on their current total. If a player total exceeds 21 they "bust" and automatically lose the hand.
- Each player receives a five-card hand in Whiskey Poker and a spare hand is also dealt so up to nine players can participate. During the first phase of this game, each player is given the choice to pass (meaning they keep their current hand, but reserve the right to switch cards in the future), exchange (swap their hand face up for the face down spare hand) or knock (signifying they are satisfied with their hand). If no one knocks and play makes it to the dealer, the second round begins and the spare hand is turned face up (if no one has already exchanged). Players can now exchange one card, exchange all five cards or knock. Each of the other players receives one more turn once a player knocks and the best five-card poker hand wins.
