Things You'll Need

Instructions

1

Find out the wireless network name (SSID) and the network passkey. The network name and passkey were set up by the network administrator when the wireless router was installed. You will need this information to connect the HP Officejet Pro 8500 to the network.
2

Turn on the computer, router and HP Officejet Pro 8500 printer.
3

Remove a USB cable if it is connected to the printer.
4

Remove any previously installed Officejet 8500 software. If you installed the printer for a USB connection, you will need to remove the software from your computer. Click "Start" and "Control Panel." Click "Printers." Right-click the HP product, and click "Delete." Allow the computer to completely uninstall the software.
5

Click the "Setup" icon on the Officejet 8500 touch screen.
6

Click "Network" and then "Wireless Setup Wizard." The setup wizard will search for available networks and display them in a list.
7

Click the name of your network. If your network name is not available, click "Enter New Network Name (SSID)," and then use the onscreen keyboard to enter the network name. Click "Done" and then "OK." Click "Infrastructure," and then click "WEP encryption or WPA encryption." If your network doesn't require a password, click "No, my network does not use encryption."
8

Enter the network passkey, if prompted, using the 8500's onscreen keyboard. Click "Done" and "OK" when finished. The printer will connect to the network. If the display screen shows an error message, verify that your network name and passkey are correct. Then go back and reenter your network name and passkey.
9

Insert the product CD into the computer's optical drive. If the installer doesn't start automatically, select the "Computer" or "My Computer" folder from the desktop "Start" menu. Double-click the optical drive to start installation. If you don't have the product disc, download the printer driver from the HP website (see Resources). Then click the downloaded file to begin installation.
10

Click the 'Recommended" installation type when prompted.
11

Select "Through the Network" in the Connection Type screen. Click "Next."
12

Connect the Officejet Pro to the computer with the USB cable when prompted by the installer. The installation will begin and instruct you to unplug the printer from the computer.
