    • 1). Stop smoking cigarettes and/or cigars. Respiratory difficulties are among the many problems this habit contributes to. The toxins in cigarettes cigars diminishes lung capacity and can result in serious health issues. Ask your doctor to refer you to a smoking cessation program.

    • 2). Take a swimming class. Swimming is a form of aerobic exercise that is excellent for increasing your ability to take in more oxygen. You can usually find swimming classes at a YMCA or community center. Check with your doctor to make certain you can safely participate in this exercise regimen.

    • 3). Take up the harmonica. Because you have to blow into this musical instrument to play it, more oxygen is needed. The more you play, the more your lung capacity is expanded. If you don't want to play the harmonica, then learning to play a wind instrument, such as the flute or saxophone, is equally helpful. You can find any of these instruments at a store that sells musical instruments and merchandise.

    • 4). Blow up a balloon daily to strengthen your lungs and increase their capacity. Start off doing this once a day and, as your endurance improves, do it three to five times every day.

    • 5). Do deep breathing exercises. This involves breathing from your belly. To do this adequately, place your hands on your abdomen to make sure your breathing is coming from there. Slowly breathe in air through your nose and then exhale forcefully through pursed lips, while sitting on the edge of your bed.
