Diseases Found in Cats

104 9

    Diabetes

    • Diabetes--when the cat's body no longer produces insulin on its own--is very common. An increase in urination and the intake of water and weight loss are symptoms. These occur within a short time. Cats that go untreated will die quickly, while those who get treatment live long lives.

    Kidney Disease

    • Kidney disease results when the kidneys no longer get rid of liquid waste and regulate body fluids effectively. Symptoms include dehydration, weight loss and appetite changes. The disease is treatable.

    Urinary Tract Disease

    • A cat's bladder can become inflamed due to a bacterial infection or if tiny crystals collect. If an increase in urination, painful urination and urination around the house occur, contact a vet. Treatment is easy if it's in time. A blockage might result if treatment is neglected, ending in a fatality.

    Ringworm

    • Cats that are in a breeding colony or shelter are more likely to contract this disease, which is caused by a fungus, not a worm. It's spread through feces, and red, dry, scaly skin with hair loss is the main symptom. The cat will show signs of scratching. Humans can catch this, so immediate treatment is necessary.

    URI

    • URI is an upper respiratory infection, which is like the human common cold. Your cat will experience symptoms such as hay fever, runny nose and sneezing. This is treatable.
