    The Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad Museum

    • The Dansville area's premier rail museum, the Rochester and Genesee Valley Museum sits on a restored 1930s depot. An extensive in-house collection of railroad rolling stock is highlighted by several operating and semi-operating trains, including steam locomotives, freight cars and diesel-electric locomotives. There is a 2-mile rail that connects this museum to the New York Museum of Transportation.

    • The New York Museum of Transportation features active exhibits, historic models, a research library and an extensive series of trolley rides. Vehicles on display include a steam locomotive, 11 trolley cars, a caboose and antique horse-drawn carts. Popular special exhibits include a trolley from the historic Spaghetti Warehouse Restaurant, and a color film of the Rochester subway.

    History of Dansville Area Railroads

    • Railroad lines in the Dansville area were some of the first local lines in the entire nation. Planning for rails began in 1825, before the steam locomotive had even been invented. Train use expanded with population growth and technology, and was an important part of New York State transportation through the 20th century. The 1870 station still standing in downtown Dansville is considered a historic monument and is under consideration by both the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the Landmark Society in Rochester for conservation activities.
