About Breathing Exercises for Labor
- The function of breathing exercises during labor is to help the woman work through the pains as they come, generally without the use of medications.
- Take long, deep breaths during the beginning and toward the end of each contraction. This also increases oxygen for the baby.
- During mild contractions, take slow breaths in and out about eight to 10 times per minute. Find a focal point, and once the contraction has subsided, take a cleansing breath.
- As the intensity of the contractions increase, take faster breaths 10 to 20 times per minute. Use less of the abdomen and more of the chest muscle.
- During the most intense stage of labor, use a shallow, panting technique. Breathe in three times, then blow out once, and stay focused on your focal point.
