How to Plant & Maintain Monkey Grass Lawn
- 1). Remove all existing weeds and plants from the area you're going to seed with monkey grass, and rake it with a stiff rake down to a depth of 2 inches.
- 2). Cut an edge around the planting area with a straight-edge shovel, and insert plastic garden edge or lawn dividers down to a depth of 12 inches to prevent the monkey grass from spreading to garden beds and other areas.
- 3). Spread the seed by taking a handful and throwing it in a wide, consistent arc while traveling in one direction. Seed the entire area by traveling back and forth in this manner, then repeat the procedure in rows perpendicular to the first pass.
- 4). Rake the seed in with the stiff rake.
- 5). Water the seeded area thoroughly (for about half an hour) with a sprinkler hose right after planting, and then twice weekly until the grass has grown to a height of 2 or 3 inches. Avoid walking on the seeded area.
- 6). Water the monkey grass once or twice a week only when it is dry after it has been established, and mow it once each spring.
