Heel Spur Treatment

101 10
Heel spurs themselves will not cause you pain. Heel spurs are simply the end result of having injured the plantar fascia ligament. The plantar fascia main job is supporting the arch of the foot. When you are walking the plantar fascia endures approximately two times the body weight of the walker. If there is a lack of flexibility in the calf muscles this will also lead to increased tension in this ligament.

The treatment for heel pain due to plantar fasciitis is a two fold process. You have to heal the inflamed tissue where the plantar fascia attaches to the heel. As the inflamed tissue is healing it is important to also correct the problem that initially caused the plantar fasciitis and the heel pain.

A majority of patients can find relief through a conservative or non-surgical treatment of Plantar Fasciitis. Common remedies in this case are:
• Ice Packs - This should be applied to the inflamed area
• Night Splint - The mild stretching caused by night splints help in tensioning the calf muscles and Plantar Fascia
• Shock wave therapy - Shock wave pulses applied through a special machine helps in relieving the soreness
• Anti-inflammatory drugs - Ibuprofen drugs help in the relief of heel pain
• Cortisone injections - The steroid treatment is locally administered in the heel area

Another treatment aims not on reducing the inflammation but on decreasing the pain caused by it. This is done through the use of orthotics or devices that help in correcting the stress and pressure that affects the feet. These devices are easily acquired from pharmacies and most retail stores. However, custom made ones are more recommended since it can cater to the specific needs of the individual who will be wearing the device. Aside from orthotics, wearing shoes that has soft cushions are also said to be effective in lessening the pain and irritation.

Many herbs have anti inflammatory properties. A few good herbs to try for a heel spur are curcumin, white willow bark extract, and bromelain . Curcumin is the spice found in turmeric. Take 400 to 600 mg one to three times a day. White willow bark extract provides anti inflammatory phenolic glycosides, which are known to inhibit cyclooxygenase. Bromelain contains anti inflammatory enzymes which are proven to suppress inflammation and pain.

According to the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS), 72% of people who used stretching exercises to lesson heel pain, had the pain subside. Do not ignore heel pain. It could be an early sign of a variety of serious conditions. That is why early treatment of your heel pain is so valuable. And the good news is, most foot heel pain treatment plans are easy and can be conducted at home. Surgery is hardly ever necessary unless you let it get out of hand.

Most of the treatments or combinations of them will help to clear up the pain and inflammation of heel spurs in as little as 90 days. Heel spurs, though not often talked about, are a common problem. They are often linked to the problem of plantar fasciitis, but are a separate issue. The two are connected, however, and are treated in much the same way since one often causes the other. If you suspect you have heel spurs that are causing you discomfort, consult a physician and see if it can be diagnosed. Once you reach that stage, you can talk with your doctor about a treatment regimen that will work for you.
