Place the point of a small cold chisel between the ridge on the back of the dust cap and the hub. Tap lightly with a hammer and separate the dust cap from the hub. Use care not to bend the hub and rotate the wheel as needed to remove the dust cap as straight off the hub as possible.

Expose the cotter pin in the center of the adjusting nut. Use pliers to straighten and remove the cotter pin. Throw the cotter pin away and replace it with a new one at reassembly.

Turn the bearing adjusting nut counterclockwise to remove.

    • 6). Wiggle the wheel and tire assembly to force the outer bearing from its race. It will slide out enough to grasp with your fingers. You will be able to remove the outer trailer bearing from the hub at this point simply by sliding it off the spindle.

    • 7). Hold the wheel and tire assembly at the top and bottom and pull while wiggling, the entire assembly will come off the spindle at this point.

    • 8). Look to see if the inner bearing and seal stayed on the spindle. They should have come off with the hub, but sometimes (rarely) stay on the spindle. If they have stuck use a gear puller to remove them. Do this by placing the jaws of the puller behind the bearing and screwing the screw of the puller against the outer end of the spindle.

Remove the inner bearing from the hub with the wooden dowel and a hammer. Place the wheel inner side down on the floor. Insert the dowel through the hub and against the back of the bearing. Strike with the hammer to drive the bearing and seal from the hub.
