Every state has different legal requirements for new drivers regarding physical ability to drive, age, education and experience behind the wheel. New Jersey has its own set of legal requirements for all new drivers and residents who want to obtain a license within the state and what insurance they will need to drive an automobile. - New drivers and first time applicants for driver's licenses within the state of New Jersey must be at least 18 years of age. Any individual who wants to apply for a driver's license under the age of 18 must have parental or a legal guardian's signed consent and must pass the graduated driver's license process. Everyone, under or over the age of 18, must pass the vision, knowledge and driving tests.
- There are three different permits that new driving applicants under the age of 18 must receive before they get their actual license. The Special Learner's Permit restricts young drivers under the age of 18 from driving between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.; they must also be accompanied by a passenger who is a family member and is at least 21 years of age. An Examination Permit is given to student drivers who are 17 years or older and not in suspension status. They cannot drive between the hours of midnight and 5:00 a.m. and must have a family member in the car with them who is at least 21. The Provisional Driver's License is the final permit for student drivers which also restricts driving between midnight and 5:00 a.m., allows no more than one passenger from outside the driver's household and permits the driver to operate the vehicle alone.
- All drivers in the state of New Jersey must pass the 6 point ID verification program to prevent against identity theft of personal and legal documents. To obtain a license, you must bring proof of address (a utility or credit card bill) and a birth certificate, or something that proves you were born on that date, along with your Social Security number.
- For adult drivers over the age of 18 or for adults who have moved to New Jersey and must get their license within 60 days, there are specific requirements for obtaining a driver's license. A driver's education class still must be taken; these are available online for as low as $39 as of March 2010. These courses prepare a driver to take the actual driving test at the DMV along with the written portion.
