- 1). Plant Mediterranean shrubs along entryways and garden paths. Use some variety of species, but limit the types to three or four kinds. Some favorite topiaries for this type of design include boxwood, rosemary, lavender and bay.
- 2). Place trees, such as Italian cypress or olive, near the perimeter of your garden space or property to create a natural privacy fence. A variety of citrus trees can also provide a shady nook for a bench and add variety to the landscaping. When deciding tree spacing, don't forget how large the trees will eventually grow to prevent future overcrowding.
- 3). Plant colorful flowers and plants with diverse foliage in rustic terra cotta containers. You could also plant small trees or shrubs in large terra cotta pots if desired. In larger, more formal Italianate landscaping, the terra cotta pots should be oversized and identical; however, in smaller spaces, you may mix different sizes of containers with a complementary design.
- 4). Use climbing vines on pergolas, such as climbing roses or star jasmine, to create a lush and decadent feel. Ground covers, such as creeping Jenny, can complete the blank spaces in the landscape.
