- 1). Check with the manufacturer of your existing gas pumps to see if they can be retrofitted to accept credit cards. If so, order and install the necessary card-reading equipment. If not, you will need to install new pumps that already contain card readers. Although this may incur some expense, it will still be worthwhile, as your cost savings will overcome the expense over time.
- 2). Inform your credit card merchant services provider that you will be installing pay-at-the-pump capability. Many merchant credit card processors have special rates for pay at the pump transactions that can save you money. If you're thinking about changing your merchant provider, this is a good time to shop around to see who will give you the best deal on pay at the pump transactions.
- 3). Install the necessary interface between your pumps and your existing credit card processing system. This can be either a wired or wireless interface depending on the type of pump and card reader you are using. Test the interface once it is installed to ensure that all card data is being captured and transmitted correctly.
- 4). Post new signage inside your station and at your pumps to inform your customers that you now have pay-at-the-pump capability available. Make sure your pumps are clearly labeled to show which credit cards are accepted.
- 5). Train your employees on your new system so that they know how to deal with malfunctions and any other processing problems that may arise. Also, make sure that they know how to reload the receipt dispenser on the pump when it runs out. Tell them to remind customers who pay with a credit card in the store that they now have the ability to pay directly at the pump.
