What Auto Insurance Is Mandatory in California?

    Minimum Coverage Needed

    • The only coverage requirements in the state of California, according to the website AmPmInsure.org, are liability coverage minimums in the amount of $15,000 if the policyholder injures one person, $30,000 if he injures multiple persons and $5,000 if he damages other property or vehicles on the road. This coverage, known as 15/30/5, does not cover the actual policy holder's vehicle, himself or his passengers, but if an accident is not his fault, the other driver's liability coverage will pay for the policy holder's damages.

    California Automobile Assigned Risk Plan

    • If a low-income California driver qualifies for the California Automobile Assigned Risk Plan, the minimum liability requirements in the state are lowered to 10/20/3. Applications for the program are available at the Automobile Insurance Plan Service Office website.

    Is Basic Better?

    • California's minimum liability coverage will satisfy the state's requirements, but many other states require additional coverage for uninsured motorist or personal injury protection coverage to legally drive. Identify your various options with your auto insurance broker to determine the plan that suits your budget and needs.
