Appleby-in-Westmorland is located on the Eden River in Cumbria.
This town is in the historic county, Westmorland and originally its name was only Appleby.
The main industry is tourism as it is very close to Howgill Fens, Swaledale, North Pennines and the Lake District.
Above the town has a castle, Appleby castle that overlooks the town.
This castle was first built in the 12th century and has changed ownership many times throughout time.
In the mid 17th century the castle was restored to a classical mansion house.
This castle is not open to the public as it is a private residence.
Much of the beauty of the area is due to the scenery and conservation areas.
Howgill Fells is a group of hills of which part are in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
These hills are a beautiful place to walk as they have beautiful views of the Lake districts, Cauttley Spout, Yorkshire dales and one of England's highest waterfalls.
The two largest peaks include the Yarlside and the Calf.
These two hills are known as the two Marilyn's.
The Lake District is nearby and is a very popular holiday spot.
The most popular part is the Lake District national park in the central areas and is one of the only parts of England with mountains.
There is a lot of wildlife in the district which includes the red squirrel and tow carnivorous plants found in England, the butterwort and the sundew.
Swaledale is a valley and is one of the most northernmost valleys, or dales in the Yorkshire dales National Park.
There has always been a lot of sheep farming in the dale and some famous products derived from sheep include Swaledale cheese and woolen products.
Swaledale is also a popular hiking area as the coast to coast walk passes through it as well as plenty of countryside, moors and forests.
