The Rich, Full Aroma Of Fresh Roasted… Outsourcing?
Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages in the world, and in the last decade, super premium coffee and coffee drinks have become an obsession in America. Maybe it's because we need the caffeine, or maybe because we love the ritual. But whatever the reason, coffee drinkers swill an average of more than 3 cups a day, and a lot of it is in Starbucks, Caribou Cafe, Tin Horton's or one of the chains that offers all manner of coffee beverages.
Whatever your brew and wherever you buy it, every now and then you probably feel that today's quaff is, well, not quite up to snuff.
50 years ago, the percolator was king of home-brewed coffee. Then we, learned about drip brewing, the French press, and... god help us... the cappuccino machine. Now many homes use Melita, the Kureig K-Cup, and other high-end coffee makers that take the guess-work out of coffee with a bit of automation, and pre-packaged / pre-measured coffee pods. How do these "pod" machines stand up to a human brewed cup of coffee? Well, studies say, pretty well, with pods usually being preferred in blind taste tests.
In the office, we've gone even further. The coffee vending machine, which mixed equal parts of coffee powder with milk powder and stirred in a little stale water, has long since been replaced by reasonably credible coffees. Alternatively, you have more industrial versions of the K-Cup, Flavia or other coffee machine. Now, a new comer, Briggo, has created a unique type of coffee machine that hyper automated and is, in fact, a big box (nearly the size of a van) full of robots.
Briggo is not just trying to replace the cup of coffee from the cart on the street, or the blue and white paper cup of coffee from the local diner. They are taking aim squarely at the very high end of coffee shops. If Briggo meets all of its goals, it may bring upon us the barrista apocalypse, by outsourcing the 95,000 barristas employed by Starbucks alone.
If a consistently great cup of coffee isn't enough to lure you away from your local coffee house, Briggo has another trick up its sleeve. It's not just a very big vending machine, it's a cloud service! It has an app for your phone to pre-order your coffee, so that your perfectly brewed cup of coffee is ready exactly when you want it. Order a double espresso for 8:35am, and that's exactly when the robot barrista delivers your coffee. Not a precious second of your morning will go unintentionally un-caffinated. Aahhhh... fresh, roasty, and robotic... just the way I like my morning brew! What about you?
