Every day there are more and more products being exposed to contain chemicals that can have ill effects on our children's health.
Is it any wonder that so many parents are turning to more natural remedies for children? You can never be sure what toxins you're exposing your children to so why not stick with some tried and true natural remedies for children.
Cultures all over the world have relied on natural treatments for centuries.
Sore Throat Mix 1 tablespoon each of honey and lemon juice.
Give one tsp at a time as needed.
(Honey is not recommended for children under one) Honey has been known for centuries to have many health benefits.
It is soothing and contains anti-bacterial properties.
Lemon is also known to have many health benefits, among them, anti-bacterial properties.
Either of these could also be administered individually, a tsp of honey can be given on its own or lemon juice can be mixed 1:1 with water and gargled.
Cough Place a few drops of eucalyptus oil on the back of your (or your child's) hand and have them inhale the scent.
Eucalyptus is known to help coughs and is contained in many over-the-counter cough remedies.
It contains eucalyptol which fights bacteria and loosens phlegm.
Headache Headache soothing herbs, marjoram, mint, bee balm, roses or cloves can be placed in a small pouch, wrapped in a cotton cloth or even sewn into a tiny square pillow.
Use only one or two of the herbs at a time or the smell will be too overwhelming.
One of the easiest ways to help a headache is by simply placing a cold damp cloth or ice filled cloth on your child's forehead.
In either case, the key to success is getting your child to relax so that the remedy can take effect.
Often, singing, reading or telling them a story is enough distraction to relieve some of the tension long enough for the herbs or ice to start working.
Earaches Few things are as painful for a child as an earache.
One of the following methods should help to ease your child's discomfort.
- Warm some cooking oil and place a few drops into the ear (always check temperature of oil on wrist before applying).
- Use a blow dryer, set on low, and hold it about a foot away from the ear.
- Warm up some baby oil and place a few drops in the ear.
Teething Teething is an extremely painful, scary time for your baby.
These remedies might help ease some of their pain and help them (and you) get a little much-needed rest.
- Frozen washcloth.
Wet a facecloth and freeze it, it's gentler on the gums than a store bought teething ring.
- Clove oil is very strong, but a couple drops mixed with 2 tbsp of olive or grapeseed oil will help relieve teething pain.
- Vanilla extract warms the gums and has a soothing effect, (not to mention it smells delicious) Car sickness, Upset stomach, nausea Brew a tea with a tsp of shredded ginger in 4 oz of boiling water, steep four or five minutes.
Honey can be added to improve the taste.
Once cool have your child drink it 30 minutes before a car ride.
(Not recommended for children under 2) If you have a hard time getting your child to drink the tea you could also try adding just the grated ginger to a tsp of honey.
Ginger is commonly known to be very effective against all types of nausea and motion-sickness.
These natural remedies for children are not meant to replace seeking medical help when the situation calls for it, they are simply ways of helping to relieve pain and discomfort caused by everyday, minor ailments.
