Bike Chain: Simple Cleaning Procedures

105 1
Cleaning the chains of bicycles for heavy people could be a no-sweat. It is just like cleaning chains of regular bikes. You do not have to be a skilled person or possess special tools and devices to do a great job.

The following are easy methods on how to clean chains of bikes for heavy people.

1. LoOK for an area outside your house where messing up the floor is totally OK. It could be your garage or even a narrow spot anywhere outdoors. Then spread some old newspapers on the floor under your big bike. Lean your bike against something stable so your hands can be free and ready to do the cleaning.

2. Shift your gears and turn your pedals until the smallest chain is on the socket at the back and the biggest chain is in front.

3. Get a clean rag and put an adequate amount of isopropyl alcohol and then use that to wipe on your chain. Do the wiping while slowly turning your pedals backwards. The sticky grease and grime collected by your chain should loosen. This will allow you to get rid of them a lot easier. If your big bike has a master link, start the wiping there. It will be your mark that tells you how far you still need to go. Continue wiping using the rag and solvent until you have worked on all links of your chain. You might need to apply more solvent a couple of times since isopropyl alcohol evaporates quickly.

4. Check on your rag to see how you are doing with the cleaning. You will see when you are making a lot of progress when the rag gets less and less dirty and greasy.

5. After this process, you will notice a huge improvement on your chain but if you loOK closely, you will see that you have only cleaned a specific side of your chain. So to clean the other sides which were barely touched, you need to do another simple process. Get a toothbrush and dip in into the same solvent you used then brush off other accumulated grease and grime in between the links. Perform the same method of turning the pedal backwards in a slow pace. Pay more attention on spots which the rag did not get to reach. Angle the toothbrush to reach those hard-to-reach areas.
6. Since the chain is not the only part which can collect dirt and grease, you also need to clean other parts like the chain rings, rear pulleys of derailleur, and sprockets. Use another piece of rag with sufficient amount of isopropyl alcohol to clean them.

7. Do a final wiping on your chain because there could be some little pieces of grease and grime sticking out. You also need to wipe down the frame of your big bicycle [http://www.zizebikes.com/products/bicycles/traditional-bicycles/Default.aspx].

These processes are very basic and there are other methods to completely clean your chain. Such techniques could take you more time and effort since you need to detach your chain from the chain and soak it in isopropyl alcohol. But if you regularly clean your chain, these basic methods are sufficient to have well-maintain chains of bicycles for heavy people [http://www.zizebikes.com/category/bicycles/Default.aspx].
