The Starcraft Craze
The word on gaming everywhere these days is on Starcraft 2. Its has already became a national sport in Korea, and although its not as popular as Soccer or Football, chances are that you most probably be able to 'break the ice' with a male stranger bystander at a bus-stop these days with this topic. Uhmm..yeah we're serious.
How can this be possible ? From what started out as merely a computer game in 1998, Starcraft 2 has grown into such as large franchise and following has surpassed even their developers Blizzard Entertainment Inc expectations. Already being a national sport in Korea, we are told that even the average gamer earns more than your usual white collar worker. Yes, we're not kidding.
To put 'icing on top of the cake', the scale of these competitions have grown so large and intense that they are even hosted in stadiums with audiences of more than 40,000 people, just to watch Starcraft on a large screen live. Apparently, there are also dedicated channels for the Starcraft game as well.
To us, this is new especially if you're not a Korean and personally one day I would like to take attendance of one of such tournaments. Reportedly, players even have managers in suits, and teams having their own custom made uniforms often resembling colorful and fashionable jumpsuit wear. If this doesnt impress you, there will be also mascots and stunning models parading around!
These days, even our female counterparts are starting to show an interest in Starcraft2, although we would obviously like to see better progress. Check out an interesting article here [http://hubpages.com/hub/Starcraft-2-/]. What came as a pleasant surprise is that the ESL female champion for Asia in 2010 is a Taiwanese celebrity and our money is on the fact that there are more out there like her, or so we like to believe.
Isn't this just amazing ? Perhaps in the near future we wouldnt need to join social networking sites to meet people anymore, we would meet them through online games instead and this is a very likely trend. Now, we can already see this with some iOS games, whereby having more friends meaning more daily in-game benefits of various sorts. The trends start showing that you would add people that you dont know personally just for this sole-purpose. I know this sorts really nerdy, but this is an interesting dont you think ?
For now, hopefully our girlfriends can start picking this up and give cut us some slack during our 'nerd-up' sessions.
