Autism Intervention - How to Get Started - Part 2
An Autism Intervention Specialist Doctor Explains: (In part 1 of this article series about autism intervention, I explained the basic concept of "How to Get Started" with biomedical autism treatment.
Most important in this process is having an Action Plan which includes the following categories) 1.
Getting Informed 2.
Maintaining an Open Mind 3.
Understanding the 4 Major Categories of Biomedical Autism Treatment 4.
Developing Your Action Plan Autism Intervention: Getting Informed The first step along the biomedical journey is to begin informing yourself about the various options available for treatment.
This can be a daunting task as the list of options is expanding all the time.
However, I have some great news for you! To get started you do not have to know one iota of biochemistry, physiology or even medicine.
All you need to have is a firm commitment to implement some basic therapies such as a gluten, casein, and soy free diet, basic supplements like a multi-vitamin, multi-mineral, essential fats such as low dose cod liver oil, some calcium, magnesium, and even extra zinc to support your child's immune system.
With these basic therapies many autism-spectrum individuals respond quite nicely with improved environmental awareness, better eye contact, less self-stimulatory behavior and more.
I am going to ask of you to trust (and keep an open mind) what I have seen work successfully for the majority of other parents and their children, and what other parents are seeing working well for their children.
There is a trust factor involved in the biomedical approach.
This is not to indicate that you do not use your own judgment or "parental comfort factor meter" for the suggestions I make or what you hear from others.
But, suffice it to say that the majority of dietary suggestions, supplements, and other therapies being implemented for autism-spectrum children have been proven to be safe and effective.
A great resource for this is the Autism Research Institute (www.
autism.
com) founded in the mid-60's by the late Dr.
Bernard Rimland.
This research institute keeps a record of parent survey observations for years highlighting those therapies reported most helpful for their children.
