"How Are You Going To Reach Your Personal Summit As An Aesthetic Professional?"
One of my wife and I's favorite vacations is to go to Zion National Park in southern Utah, my home state. It's
There are a lot of naturally occurring phenomena there that don't occur anywhere else in the world. The scenery is wonderful and the hiking trails are outstanding.
People come from all over the world to experience the breathtaking views and the wonderful adventures it provides. In fact, there has never been a time when we've gone there when we haven't met a group from a different country…Europe usually.
Paul, what does this have to do with anything you ask?
Well it was on a hike up Angels Landing that I saw a great parallel between that hike and the way I live my life. The picture I posted is of me trying to freak out my wife by faking a leap into the wind…I got "the look". Ok, so I goof off a lot when on vacation, but isn't that what vacations are for?
This is not an easy hike and it's not for anyone afraid of heights. You climb up 1,488 feet to the summit. The average hiker takes about 4 hours to do the hike up and back.
There are steep drop offs and sections where you hold on to a chain to help you climb. If you fell from most of the steep parts of the trail you would certainly die.
The first part is very physically trying. There are a lot of switchbacks and it is a major workout. My wife had a tougher time this year because she is pregnant and I kept running ahead and getting her a bit upset with me.
As I was going up the first part there wasn't much to be afraid of but it took a lot of energy. Kind of like in business when you first start out you don't have a ton to lose because you haven't made anything yet. There's not much to be afraid of, but you find that it takes a ton of work and, frankly, it wears you out.
Then there is the middle part of Angels Landing that is fairly flat and easy. This is when you figure out your business and start making some money. You don't have to work as hard because you've got some systems in place to help out as well as some good employees who actually get things done. Life is pretty good.
Most Never Go Beyond This Point
Then you look at where you need to go from there and it is a bit scary. It's a steep and narrow trail with huge drop offs on both sides. Your gut instinct was to say, "Not gonna happen"…at least that's what mine said. But I pushed on.
It's not as physically exhausting as the first part, but it is more complicated. You have to climb up and down boulders and grab onto a chain to keep you from falling to your doom. In order to grow in business once we've created something is very painful because there is always that fear of loss or failure. We have to grow as a person to really reach the summit or peak of our profession.
This part takes a lot more mental energy because we have to think about how to get around obstacles and there are people in your way. It's tricky, but if you listen to the guides you'll make it just fine. If you don't you could die. Or metaphorically speaking, your business could die.
That's why most stay at the calm spot. They don't want to grow. They are functioning just fine and don't really need or want help. They don't want to grow.
Unfortunately, that's where most stay. They don't push past their limits to see what they can do. They just want to be average. They tell themselves that they don't make a lot of money because they're not greedy like those other plastic surgeons who are making millions…but they know that's a lie. Truth is they want to be the one who climbs all the way to the top…they are scared and just don't want to admit it.
The difference between me and the other successful business owners out there is we admit we are scared and do it anyway. We take action so fast that we don't have time to think about how scared we are. We act because that is where true happiness and freedom lie. We act because we've been to the top of summits before and know the feeling of accomplishment that we get.
Don't get stuck in a rut like that. Never stay comfortable. Keep pushing forward. If you reached your goal of $1 million in practice revenue this year, push to $1.25 or $1.5 million next year. Never stop growing. Once you've reached one summit go for another.
Life is about setting goals and achieving those goals and then doing it again. Compete against yourself and you'll find that your competition can't keep up.
