Wood Finishing Colors for Cedar

    Reddish Brown Finishes

    • Many cedar varieties have a natural red tint, so a finish like Clopay's Knotty Alder will bring out the red and darker brown hues in the wood, whether you're applying the stain to flooring or furniture. Light Cedar from Clopay also boasts red undertones that will complement red, orange or yellow area rugs or drapery to solidify the warm hue color scheme in the room. Rich shades of blue in the furniture accents will bring out the reddish hues in the finish as well, since blue and red are across from each other on the color wheel.

    Dark Brown Finishes

    • Rich brown tones for cedar flooring like Dark Cedar or Spanish Cedar from Clopay give any room a stately and sophisticated look; lighter-colored cedar furniture will add more attractive wood accents to the room without inundating it with pronounced color. Clopay's Luan Plywood is a finish that adds intense brown color to a room, and will coordinate nicely with dark brown paneling or large furniture pieces in the living room or bedroom.

    Medium Brown Finishes

    • Use a medium brown finish like Fir or Medium Cedar from Clopay on your cedar hardwood floors to add more intense neutral color to a room painted in classic white or light tan walls. Flooring with Clopay's Redwood cedar stain will add a tinge of warm orange-like color to the room that will match peachy or burnt orange paneling well. A cedar bureau or end tables with a nutmeg or honey-colored finish will add to the medium warm tones in the room; attractive accents like a red flower arrangement or ceramic figurine adds a pop of color in the same color family as the furniture.

    Light Brown Finishes

    • If most of the furniture in the room is made of light-colored wood, or pieces painted in pastel colors like yellow, white or blue, choose wood finish for the cedar floors in hues like Clopay's Meranti. This finish also has flecks of dark brown to provide a contrast in the room and keep it from appearing too stark. For a cedar dresser or armoire, a paint finish like Hemlock from Clopay will intensify the light color of the wood, and create a contrast between the feature furniture piece and wood flooring in a darker brown shade or area rug in a jewel tone like garnet or turquoise.
