If you were dieting, you wouldn't give up all the problematic foods instantly, you would wean your way off them slowly and this is exactly what you should do.
I was down to 7 a day before I decided to stop and this worked well for me, I decided to still try and be around others who smoked just to be around the smell and this worked very well for me.
This doesn't work for everyone however, you need to decide quickly if you can still comfortably be around other smokers without getting itchy fingers.
Many people find joining a group instrumental in quitting as the support is priceless, having friends to pick you up when you are weak is something you simply have to take advantage of and they are usually free to join.
I didn't need to take that route as me and my wife vowed to quit together but I can only reiterate the importance of having people to help you on the way.
When you first give up the cigarettes all together, try and avoid going out to the pub with your friends, in fact try not to go anywhere which encourages you to smoke.
Don't create situations which usually result in you smoking, or inevitably you will.
Giving up smoking is one of the hardest challenges you will face but the results are worth it.
You will be financially far better off, your health will be greatly improved and you won't smell all the time.
