Making Money From Home While Avoiding Distractions
By Michael Griep

I'm willing to say most of us know someone in the neighborhood whose car does not leave their driveway in the morning, while the rest of the neighbors speed off to work with coffee mug in hand. Although he/she may the person always dressed in casual clothes and perhaps unshaven, don't make the assumption he is not focused on their profession. While making money from home is gaining popularity, it is still somewhat viewed as unorthodox or even "odd" by most traditional minded individuals.

As someone who does make money from home, I'd like to point out certain distractions which I and perhaps you will need to contend with.

Just because I am home does not indicate I am available to hang with, talk, or get together to socialize. I punch my own clock, and cannot vary from my schedule. No doubt you know people who will occasionally attempt to invade your space or compromise your time because they do not understand that making money from home is very similar to being under the scrutinizing eye of a traditional boss. Set limits if you need to regarding phone calls, or unannounced "stop bys" during your designated workday.

One of the appeals of making money from home is the time freedom you control to accomplish personal tasks throughout the day. If you need to run errands, or do anything unassociated with your business, be sure to account for this time the prior day. We all fall victim occasioanlly to procrastination of tedious or daunting tasks. Don't fill your time with distracting activities simply to avoid doing that which you need to accomplish to move your business forward. Being busy does not always translate to being productive.

Perhaps the greatest challenge in making money from home is dealing with family and kids. It's not their fault, they're used to seeing you come home from work and your time is their time. Although you have the freedom (and should), take occasional time for social breaks with your kids, it is critical you outline boundaries where you simply cannot be interrupted. For example, when you are in your office or designated work area, you are off limits to approach to play catch or make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. This at first may be uncomfortable, but remember the days when you were in the rat race? You were not available until you came home. Believe me, if you're firm upfront you'll avoid many future scenarios which pull you away from your business.

Making money from home is a growing trend. Putting in place some basic parameters to allow you to be productive and efficient will pay dividends, and eventually allow you to focus on all the distractions of life which in most cases are the most important.

Good Luck

Mike
